by | May 10, 2019 | The Rubin Chiropractic Health Center Blog

Many people are aware of the help that chiropractors can give them in relieving neck and back pain. However, you may not be aware that chiropractic care can also be used to treat the symptoms of arthritis to decrease pain and improve mobility. Here’s what you need to know about chiropractic care for arthritis.

How It Works

Adjusting the spine doesn’t just improve the spine and neck, it also improves the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. Many doctors believe that this can have an affect on the function of all of the organs and joints in the body. Research has been done in the last decade to determine how chiropractic care might be able to treat arthritis. In 2010, it was discovered that it helps with knee arthritis. In 2013, a study showed that it could also help with hip arthritis and pain.

Who Shouldn’t Have Chiropractic Care for Arthritis?

There are some people who should not have chiropractic care for arthritis. If you have severe inflammation, such as due to an active flare up, you should not have chiropractic work done until the inflammation goes down. If you are in an active flare up, you should see your doctor for options, which may include steroids or other medications.

You also shouldn’t have chiropractic adjustments if you have a fused spine or osteoporosis in the spine or neck. There may be other health conditions that prevent you from getting chiropractic care. Your chiropractor will take a medical history and examination prior to your first adjustment to ensure that you are a good candidate.
