Cryotherapy for Weight Loss

Cryotherapy is a new technology that we offer in our clinic. Cryotherapy is essentially immersing yourself in extremely cold temperatures (about negative 250 degrees Fahrenheit) for just a few minutes at a time. It has been shown to have many great benefits, including faster recovery after a workout, increased focus and energy, and weight loss.

Cryotherapy has been found to be highly effective as a weight loss tool, especially when combined with diet and exercise. When the body is plunged into cold temperatures, fat cells die off. These destroyed fat cells are flushed from your body naturally through the liver. Coolsculpting is another popular treatment that uses these principles. However, since cryotherapy uses colder temps and is done as a whole-body experience, your results can be much more dramatic.

You see, there is a substance in your body called brown adipose tissue, or BAT, that burns fat and helps your body create energy when faced with extreme cold. It is a natural response to cold that Mother Nature deemed fit to imbue us with. This is why cryotherapy is so effective for weight loss.

There is quite a bit of scientific evidence to back up these claims. A 2013 study found that people who had their whole body immersed in cold temperatures for two hours a day over six weeks lost an average of 2 percent body fat. Of course, these temperatures were not as cold as cryotherapy, which you can only do for a few minutes.

Another study in 2018 by the Journal of Obesity found that when people are exposed to cryotherapy for a few minutes each day on a long-term basis it creates a process in the body called cold-induced thermogenesis. This process led to a total loss of body fat of 3 percent.
